7 best snack foods to always have on hands: Perfect for college dorm rooms, apartments, and families!

When you head off to college or to live on your own, despite if you have an on campus meal plan, chances are more than likely that you will have to provide food for yourself at least a couple of times. The fact of the matter is, walking to the nearest dining hall or café isn’t always convenient in your busy lifestyle.

However, when living in a dorm room or apartment the size of a shoe box, cooking a full-fledged feast every time you get hungry isn’t an option. From late night party study sessions and running late to an 8am class, to needing something light on the way to the gym and craving something to satisfy your sweet tooth that is under 200 calories, snacks are a big part of the average college student’s life.

Here are the 7 best snack foods to always have on hand:


If you ever asked me between the ages of 7 – 19 what my favorite food was.. It would be strawberries.. And still is!

Strawberries are the perfect amount of sweet, fruity, and refreshing that I value in a snack.

Pro tip: If you want an extra sweet kick, cut up your strawberries into small pieces, stir around in a small bowl with a packet or two of sugar or sugar substitute and enjoy.



If you know me in real life outside of this blog… you know about my love affair with taquitos.

Most brands of taquitos can be made equally delicious by being cooked in a microwave as in an oven or on a stove, which makes it perfect for whatever size kitchen or kitchenette you have access to.

Between work, school, clubs, and rehearsal I am always in a rush and sometimes I don’t have time to sit down to a full meal. Taquitos have just the right amount of protein that I need, and I can spice them up with a mix of sour cream and salsa so I never get bored!


You would be surprised by the amount of times our neighbor came over to use our microwave to pop popcorn last year. It got to the point where if we accidentally left our door unlocked he would walk in at 2am and make popcorn!

Microwavable popcorn is a great idea if you’re looking for something salty and light at the same time. Popcorn doesn’t make you feel weighed down. And if you happen to have some extra on hand it can always be put to use for a movie marathon with the guys next door!

Side note: If your dorm room doesn’t provide you with a microwave.. get one. Don’t be that guy having to borrow your neighbors microwave 24/7.


Rice Cakes

Rice cakes are a little messy, sure, but they are definitely one of my favorite snacks right now.

I like rice cakes because you can top them off with anything and everything. Add a slice of cheese, some tuna spread, peanut butter, nutella, or a piece of ham for some protein and flavor!

They feel light and filling at the same time, which is a difficult thing to accomplish, so you feel the perfect amount of full afterwards.


If your dorm room allows you to have a toaster, take advantage of that! Toast can be dressed up or down with a large variety of options. From avocado, coconut oil, peanut butter, ham, tuna… the possibilities are endless.

Pro tip: Toast two pieces of bread and then put a piece of cheese in between them for a mock grilled cheese if you don’t have access to a stove!

I have never been a fan of the carbonation in soda, so lemonade is definitely my signature drink. Lemonades with mango or strawberry flavor seem to taste more refreshing to me so I love to keep them on hand to brighten up my day!

      Rice cakes are so great, just make sure you pair them with something! Ham and cheese, nutella, tuna, peanut butter.. anything really!

    Hi, Dani! Just found your blog.- I recently started a blog myself :). Anyways, I’m always looking for new things to snack on and I’ll definitely have to try out taquitos! I’ve never even heard of those?! I live in Michigan, though. I do love me some strawberries (or any berry) and sugar. And I NEED to try out those M&M’s crispy- they are on my “try” list for snacks.
