Why Bother?

I’ll admit it, I never used to set goals of any kind. I didn’t see the need to write down my hopes, dreams, and the things I was working toward.

That changed when I started this blog. 13 months ago (yes I am counting) I created Dani Dearest and found myself floundering for content ideas to post. I had previously seen other bloggers do long term bucket lists that they continue to update. When I started blogging, I had no clue if I would keep at it long term, but I did know that I wanted to at least keep at it for one semester. So I started making my Semester Goals. 15 goals for 15 weeks of school. 

This was the first time I had ever actually written any of my goals down, let alone shared them with anybody at all.

It was a hit. I found myself pushing to do some of the more difficult goals just for the sake of being able to step up at the end of the semester and tell my readers that I did, in fact, complete it! I never realized how much setting goals can alter your point of view on something. Since then, I continue to make goals at the beginning of every semester.

Start Setting Goals

Grab a piece of paper, no really do it. Maybe jot this down on the back of your Time Diagnosing Worksheet from the first day of the workshop. Maybe scribble this on a napkin. Maybe type it into your phone, or color code it into your planner. Whatever you do, actually get it out of your head and down onto something!

Look at Trends

If you have been using the Time Diagnosing Worksheet that Sara provided, this is the perfect time to take a moment and reflect over it. If you haven’t been using it, take this moment to reflect on how you spent the last week or two of your time.

Do you spend 4 hours binge watching your favorite show on Netflix, only to find yourself scrambling to finish your homework 10 minutes before class? Are you often late to work because you overslept and were up too late the night before cramming for an exam? We’ve all been there.

Be honest with yourself. Nobody is going to see this part of the process except for you! Cheating this system is only going to harm you in the long run.

Make Big Goals

Based on those trends that you discovered in your habits, what are you unsatisfied with?

Go big or go home.

Maybe you are upset that you can’t run X amount of miles on the treadmill before you feel like you’re going to pass out. Maybe you really want to get an A in your Econ class or on your Marine Bio final. Maybe you want to feel more healthy, energized, and well rested. Maybe you want to read 10 books for fun, not school assignments, this semester.

Write those down. Write at least 4.

Break it Down into Baby Steps

Whenever I hear the phrase “Rome wasn’t built in a day” I get really frustrated. When I do things, I want results NOW! I want the instant satisfaction of knowing that I am on the track to something great.

Take those big goals that you have written down, and break them into tiny steps. Keep them bite sized. Big enough that you are satisfied and yet small enough that you can complete them in just one month. That’s right, one month, the length of this workshop!

Maybe you have that goal to read 10 books this semester. Break it down: “I want to read 2 books this month.” (Maybe then next month you’ll have time for 3!) Or “I want to read for 2 hours every day.”

Maybe you have the goal to get an A on your Marine Bio final. Break it down: “I want to re-write my notes within 24 hours of each lecture.” Or “I want to study for at least 2 hours every weekend until the final.”

Write it down.

Shout it to the World!

Ok, maybe you don’t have to go climbing on rooftops yelling it out to strangers on the street. You do, however, need to tell someone. If you’re a part of our Facebook group, share it there!

My Goals for October

  1. Keep up with writing these Productivity and Time Management Workshop posts each week.
  2. Re-write all my Marine Bio lecture notes at least 48 hours after each lecture. (Yes, I am really in a Marine Bio course right now!)
  3. Focus on writing down all my homework assignments in my planner, even those ones I swear I have memorized.
  4. Go to Zumba or do yoga once a week.
  5. Stop making sausages every night for dinner…
  6. Grocery shop once week… and get things besides sausages.
  7. Post at least 2 Blogging 101 posts.

    I love this post! It’s also funny that I just blogged about my goals for October before I even read this post. I started writing a monthly goals post last month and it really helped keep the goals at the forefront of my mind. I’m looking forward to this workshop you guys are doing!

    This tips are SO SO SO good!!! I need to stop making sausages for dinner too!! haha but they are so easy it’s tempting
