With final exams, projects, papers, and presentations breathing down our necks it’s easy to forget: it’s the holiday season!
If you’re anything like me, you’re drowning in work with no time (or, lets be honest, money) to get holiday presents for those you love. I saw something online the other day that said “holiday shopping is difficult when your mom deserves an island but you can only afford a candle” and I’m sure that is something we can all relate to.
While we want to give back to those who give us so much, it’s not always the easiest thing to do. I’ve always been a believer that homemade presents are the best and most meaningful presents. Luckily, I was able to find something this holiday season that was a simple, inexpensive, and quick way to make personalized gifts that matter.
I’ve never been one to send out physical holiday cards. My family has always been the type to make our own card with Photoshop and send it out via e-mail… but the older I get the more I am realizing that I appreciate those who take the time to send out something physical. It means more.
This year I have been really involved as the president of my campus’ Her Campus chapter. I knew that I wanted to get something for my chapter’s girls to show them how much all the effort that they put into our chapter means to me. So, I hopped onto the Staples Copy and Print Center and started making them a holiday card.
We had recently taken group pictures, and I was absolutely in love with how cute the funny one looked, so I was really excited when I was able to include that in the photo. Even though the photo is all of us in tank tops with the sun shining and the weather obviously pretty hot outside.. the customization options and card themes that the Staples site offered really aided in making the photo look just the right amount of holiday-y that I needed it to.
I ordered the cards, picked them up, and then had my Executive Cabinet members come over and write messages to all of our chapter members on the cards, thanking them for everything that they have done for us. It was a great bonding activity, playing some classic Christmas music and signing cards together, and when we handed the cards out to our members their faces lit up. Everybody loves seeing that the effort that they put in matters!

For my next present, I created a miniature gift basket for my vice president. First, I got a mug with our chapter’s banner printed on the outside. I did this by using the Staples Copy and Print Center photo printing website. It was really cool because there is such a huge variety of items to choose from to get anything you want printed on it, and it was really easy to navigate and use.
Then I got some clear wrapping paper (which my roommate had accidentally bought one time, thanks!) and a variety of little goodies to go inside it. From candy canes and chocolate to one of the holiday cards and a thank you note written on a wooden letter, the holiday gift bag was simple yet personal.
I wrapped up the goodies and placed it inside the mug. When I delivered the mug to her her face lit up and the first words that came out of her mouth were “now when I drink hot cocoa in the campus coffee shop they’ll know in in Her Campus!” so I think it was a perfect present.

For my final gift, I decided to make something special for my events director. She has helped me through so much this year, and I really needed to show my appreciation. She always shows up to our meetings with bags of supplies, and we have a big binder that we pass between the two of us with all of our event planning materials in it. She is graduating this year and I knew that I had to get her something special to show my appreciation and to help her remember our chapter.
I decided to get her a tote bag, to put all that stuff inside, with our chapter’s logo printed on the front. The Staples Copy and Print Center really made this easy to design with their website for making custom photo printed gifts.
To take this present up a notch, I then brought the bag to a meeting with a collection of markers and asked all of our members to sign it. Little does she know that next week this bag will be all hers! A great memento of her time with our chapter and something that she can use after she graduates and moves on into the “real world.”
