Studying abroad is the act of going to a university in another country, usually through a program, to learn and explore while still gaining credits and courses that are transferable and applicable to your degree.
This experience is a once in a lifetime chance that is available to college students which you just can’t pass up. Why should you study abroad?
1. Learn the language.
Personally, this would terrify me, but I have heard that the best way to learn a language is to be fully immersed in the culture.
While I would recommend taking at least an introductory level course in the language which you will be surrounded by so that you can get around, I know many people who travel without knowing the language. It’s a fantastic way to learn it!
2. Fulfill your Wanderlust.
Wanderlust: n; a strong desire to travel.
College students are famous for having wanderlust. Fulfill it. Feel free.
3. Appreciate the culture and history.
My best friend, Bri, is currently studying abroad in Prague and when I asked her about one of her favorite experiences she said that her top one was visiting the John Lennon wall.
“Seeing this wall was an incredible experience for me because of its incredible political impact. This wall has been graffitied with peace and Lennon inspired graffiti since the 80’s, when the Czech Republic was still under a communist regime. Students would write messages of hope on the wall in an effort to inspire people. Eventually the Czech nation became democratic, but people continue to write on this wall today. I was able to add my piece to the wall, and it was an incredible experience to be a part of this piece of Czech history.” – Bri Chase
4. See beautiful artwork, buildings, and environments.
Maybe you’re sick of the winter snow storm you’re stuck in and you’d rather study abroad in a country that is sunny 90% of the time. Maybe you’re an art history major and you dream of wandering through museums in other nations. Maybe you get awestruck looking at architecture and dream of checking out old castles.
All valid reasons to want to go abroad.
5. Meet interesting new people.
When you study abroad through a program you’ll be put together with a ton of students who are also studying abroad. You’ll make lifelong friendships with these students, as well as the students who you meet who live in the place you are studying abroad in and the other citizens of the country.
6. Be spontaneous.
The other day I FaceTimed with my best friend Bri who is currently in Prague and she told me about this amazing spur of the moment trip that she took to Sweden. She said that she just found out that train tickets to Sweden were only $30 so she grabbed her backpack, bought a ticket, and went.
It’s one of the most spontaneous things she’s ever done, and she loved it! Being able to explore other countries so simply like that sounds amazing.
7. Grow as a person.
Overall being abroad can help you grow as a person. You not only discover more about the world around you, but also more about yourself.
Let’s be honest: if you’re reading this far, part of you is probably secretly wishing you could study abroad.. and hoping that I’ll convince you to do so. So do it.
I’ve read my fair share of blog posts focused on studying abroad, and I wish I could go. Unfortunately for me, it’s just not in the cards. I can’t afford it.
Luckily for you, you have the chance to be able to afford it.
